All teachers need a little inspiration and new ideas to keep their students interested and classes exciting. Whether you are a home school parent, professional teacher, tutor or just wanting to help improve your child's scores in a subject or two, I am sure this collection of internet resources will help inspire you! As a home school parent myself, I have found with the help of the internet and my printer, it is possible to cover or enhance every subject with the most up to date information, making every lesson an exciting experience. Use the table below to jump to a particular section or scroll down the entire page for a look at everything I have found on the internet to help Colorado Parents and Teachers. Though this page is directed at Colorado Students it will also be of great wealth to any parent or teacher in the U.S. wanting a helping hand or some new ideas! I would like to Welcome you to my classroom! Let me know if there is a site you find useful that is not listed and I will add it to my collection. Sincerely: Mrs. Petit |
| Note to Home School Parents: Before you
decide to home school you need to give it a lot of thought. It is a
full time job first off, you must have the time. It can be expensive,
though this page was created to help with that, we don't get tax breaks
or reimbursement of any kind at the state or federal level. Now that
you have decided to home school, the following is simply my advice and
thoughts from one parent to another. I consider these all to be great
advise but they are not in order of importance more in order of my
train of thought as I type it! 1. Find other home school parents to support each other or join a support group. If you have a friend who is great at Art and maybe another who is a computer wizzard and you can't be beat at baking, share your talents. If each of you teach an afternoon class, that is one day with extra students and two days with a few hours off during the week! The best home schooling comes from the parents creativity in teaching. It is truly an art in itself. Expand your knowledge base, go the extra steps necessary to keep the classes fresh and exciting for both you and your child. Have your lesson plans complete and ready before you start each lesson or project. This will take up your evenings and weekends more than likely, at least a few anyway, but it is worth the effort. Use outside class sources as a break, for you and your child. They are home all the time and you are together all the time, it is ok at first but it will get to both of you sooner or later. Break up the time spent together at the desk or computer, use things like dance classes, swimming lessons, nature hikes or programs at local libraries or churches. Gym or Physical education can be tricky with one or two students, but there are ways around it. Most school districts will let you join school activities and sports teams. Though this is not the only way to do PE! Use hiking, speed walking around a local lake or park, buy a membership to the Zoo or Museum - walk and learn at the same time, spend lunch time at the neighborhood park or even your backyard, buy used gym equipment and set up a work out room, again creativity is your only limit. Good Luck and Have Fun! |

Internet Schools(If
you are going to put your child in Colorado
Public Online Schools you
must
make a day or two of it and make sure your kids take the CSAP tests,
preferably
in the district they attend Online School. If they don't take the test,
then
the school is punished. There are statewide testing sites available
for Online School students. Because the rules and schools seem to
change
constantly please visit the main site to find the online schools if the
links below no longer work. For instance as of 2008, they have added
ACT/SAT tests in 11th grade instead of CSAP http://www.cde.state.co.us/ |

Tip - Umbrella Schools can be a wonderful choice when wanting to
home
school your child. It takes a lot of the pressure from the Colorado
State
Laws off of your shoulders and assists in you meeting the Colorado State
Requirements,
but still allows you plenty of freedom in the choices of your child's
education. They are also called Cover Schools or Independent Schools.

| *Home School Tip - Home Schooling can quickly become very confusing and expensive. Use the internet and your home printer to get the most up to date and variety of lessons for all age groups, for the price of paper and ink! Combine sources and make your own lesson plans to fit your grade level needs, difficulty level and interests. |

Tip
- Incorporate Art into in any Lesson and watch your kid's
excitement
level increase with new projects or subjects. A few examples: Making a
Poster board as a book report, doing a play about the lesson, Writing
Poems
to express facts about history or any subject, Creating songs with
music
to help memorize, Creating shadow boxes on any subject or
lesson,
Design a House to explain electricity and plumbing uses for a Science
lesson
plan. The ideas are endless and only hampered by your imagination! Ask
the kids what art project they would like to use with every new lesson
plan or subject and let them figure out how to incorporate it into the
lessons! Plant a seed and watch it grow! - Hey Not a bad idea! Plant a
garden, raise some backyard chickens, landscape design, are all
lessons! I know, I know, I could go on all day. Ask my kids and with a
kid shrug of the shoulders they will tell you, "Yes we know, our Mom
can make a lesson out of anything, even visiting public restrooms!" And
I would reply, "Yes there are germs in there! Science!" |

School Tip
- Not all TV is bad TV. Watch a show on the Travel Channel and
then research more on the place you visited visually. Discovery
Channel, History Channel, Public Television are all great resources! |
|
|
| *Home School Tip - Give the Lesson plans to all their subjects on the first of each month and allow the children to work at their own pace. I give the student/s a packet for each subject with everything they are to complete with a check off sheet for assignments due in each subject or packet. Encourage them to use the internet or libraries to find their own answers but plan to be available for questions or needed help, even at 10 PM on a Friday night, if necessary. Promise free days or time per subject for work completed before the last day of the month. I find this works especially well with Teenagers and they tend to work more hours per subject on their own this way rather than working with scheduled times for each lesson. You may just find your teenager finishing a book report the first weekend of the month when they are not required to be doing school work until Monday! |
